A rupture
One of the reasons I started writing again - was to help me think.
We live in a world where there is so much content.
Whatever platform you are on - it’s easy to fall down a content rabbit hole and be lost for hours in genuinely interesting opinions and debates.
This weekend Alex Pretti - a 37-year old intensive care nurse was shot and killed from close range in what appears to be very clear and intentional cold blood.
Having watched the recent shooting of Renee Good - there was a slither of potential that the ICE agent reacted suddenly because he was hit by the car. But Alex Pretti seems to offer no threat. How have things come to this? How can this not be instantly condemned and the shooter put on trial?
In Mark Carney’s recent speech at Davos - he says “we are in the midst of a rupture not a transition”.
This resonates deeply - I feel like a line has been crossed.
I’m not someone who has engaged much in politics in my life. I’ve had an optimistic outlook of the world and I still do.
But watching Carney’s speech felt like an important moment, seeing a leader on the international stage calmly and intelligently saying that as a Nation - Canada will not pander to the US bullying around tariffs and trade wars, and will call out the pretence of “rules based international order”.
It’s easy to think ‘what can I do?’ And that’s a question that I’m sitting with at the moment.
It felt important to name that.
To at the very least acknowledge that it feels like something has changed.
And maybe there will be other countries that will find alliances and can continue to speak truth to power.
I hope that the UK might be one of them.
